Cannabis oil is a thick, sticky substance containing high levels of cannabinoids and other compounds from the cannabis plant. It can be used in different ways, including as a cooking oil or mixed with food or drinks. Some people also use cannabis oil topically to relieve pain or treat skin conditions, while others use a vaporiser to inhale it. CBD oil is a cannabis oil that often contains high levels of CBD but only trace amounts of THC.

Many different factors can affect the taste of cannabis oil. The strain will typically influence the flavour and smell as will how it's processed and extracted from the plant.

What type of Cannabis oils are there?

There are several different types of cannabis oil, and the flavour, consistency, and potency can vary depending on the extraction method and the amount of THC in each product. Some commonly available oils include:

CBD oil

This type is made with low THC and high CBD levels. CBD oil in Australia only has trace amounts of THC and will not give you psychoactive effects, so you do not feel high after using it. It is typically used as a dietary supplement to improve health or relieve pain or anxiety symptoms. CBD oils often have an earthy or grass-like flavour to them. The taste will depend on the extracts and the base oil. Some oils use olive oil, while others use hemp oil. That's why some report CBD oil taste like olive oil. In Australia you will need a prescription to access CBD oil.

Hemp seed oil

This type is extracted from hemp seeds rather than the cannabis plant and contains little-to-no cannabinoids or terpenes. It has no psychoactive effects and can be used in cooking or added to smoothies for a nutritional boost. It has a nutty taste and makes an excellent cooking oil when heated at high temperatures. Many people use it topically as well to moisturise their skin. You do not need a script to purchase hemp seed oil.

Wax or shatter

These oils are typically extracted using a solvent-based method like CO2 extraction or butane extraction, which lead to a thicker substance that is often more potent than other cannabis oils. Some people choose to use wax or shatter because they do not contain any plant material (like CBD oil), extracting the THC from the plant and making them more concentrated and providing stronger effects. They have a more potent smell and taste. You have might have heard these wax or shatters called dabs as well.
